The biggest lesson I learnt from jiu jitsu was how to truly know myself.

Carlos Gracie

Jiu Jitsu puts you completely in the moment, where you must have a complete focus in finding a solution to the problem.  This trains the mind to build focus, to increase your awareness, your capacity to solve problems.

Rickson Gracie

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a grappling based martial art, is emerging as an evidence-based treatment modality to reduce the symptoms of PTSD.  Additionally, jiu jitsu has implications to address behavioral health issues of youth involved in the juvenile justice and social service systems.

Our jiu jitsu program was developed taking the most current research and literature to heart.   Our program provides youth with structure and instills discipline.  Prosocial behaviors are developed through our unique cooperative/ competitive environment.  Youth participating in our program will learn to both better regulate their emotions and develop personal resiliency through exposure to difficult and uncomfortable positions.  This approach helps youth develop their capacity to operate under stress and discomfort, a skill useful both on and off the mat.

Our instructors not only teach jiu jitsu, they act as role models, mentors, and when needed, outreach workers.  We employ a strength-based approach focusing on youths' potential for transformation, growth, and personal development.  Unique to our program, all of our instructors have specific training in Crisis Intervention for Youth and complete Youth Mental Health First AidAdditionally, we provide an on-site, on-the-mat, mental health clinician who not only specializes in trauma work with youth but is also a jiu jitsu practitioner.  Our in-house clinician can provide both individual and group therapy to program participants.

We believe that we are the only program in the nation that can provide a jiu jitsu trained, mental health clinician, who can provide on-site on-the-mat interventions to youth involved in or at-risk of involvement in the juvenile justice system.   If other programs in the nation exist that provide this service, please email us and let us know who they are and where they are located.  Knowledge, transparency, and collaboration are ideals we value. Thank you.
